SC17 (Supercomputing) Conference - not truly exciting

SC17 was over last week but I have to say I was not excited. A number of people said the same thing. It is the same old stuff. Other than some new software apps not a whole lot of new stuff.


We were all trying to figure out why we were not excited. Here are some of the reasons we came up with.

  • A number of the key new product announcements happened before SC17.  There is no new news.
  • Attendees were not thrilled with the demo on the show floor.
  • Getting on the list of the top supercomputers in the world is less meaningful now. A number of them just throw in money and accelerator cards to get more flops.
Regardless of what it is, to make supercomputing relevant again, something needs to change.
