Marriott Hotel Workers on Strike

High cost of living has been a big issue for many of the people living in the San Francisco Bay Area which is also the high tech center of the world. I'm not surprised that the hotel workers went on strike as their wages are not keeping up with the cost of living in the area.

What I was surprised was their concern of the use of technologies at the hotels. The introduction of new technologies is supposed to improve customer service and not meant to be a reduction of work force. For example, mobile check-in and check-out have made it easy for customers to check-in and check-out without spending a long time waiting in line especially when you are in a rush to get to the airport.

Instead of waiting on the phone to request services, hotel guests can just use their smart phones to make the request. It is also much more accurate than making the request over the phone.

For the workers that are concerned about sexual harassment, the use of robot can solve the problem partially especially at night. Let's say if someone is requesting a tooth brush or shaving kit, a robot can be send instead of a human alone for the delivery.

In a competitive world, the companies that can deliver better customer service is going to survive. Think of it this way, if the company is not profitable, it won't be able to pay higher wages.
