Problems with corporate titles inflation

The problem now is companies have become too liberal with new titles. And it is creating a lot of confusion and challenges from an organizational management perspective.

  • With the rampant increase in C-suite titles, people can get confused easily. For example, the “CSO” title can be Chief Strategy Officer, Chief Sales Officer, Chief Sustainability Officer or Chief Security Officer. If someone walks up to me and introduces himself or herself as the CSO of the company, I would have a hard time guessing what his or her job is. To avoid the confusion, companies will have to add more letters to differentiate the different C-suite job titles with the same three letters C-suite title acronym. The only problem is it might sounds weird with anything over three letters.
  • Historically, CXOs were seen as top management of the organization. Employees often look to the top management for guidance. They can get confused easily by too many C-Suite titles as they might not be able to understand who is really in charge of what at the top management level.
