Many famous writers see their readers as customers. They know what kind of stories will appeal to their readers (aka customers) and many of them have a website to maintain the relationship with their readers like the one Stephen King has -https://www.stephenking.com/.

Many people think of salesmanship simply as a skill to convince people to purchase a product. However, salesmanship encompasses much more than that. It is the ability or effectiveness in presenting persuasively. In other words, it’s the skill of convincing people to buy things or to accept or agree to something. For example, if a writer would like to contribute to the Business Insider, one would need to make a pitch to convince the editor to accept his/her article or story. Please see excerpt below from the Business Insider Contributors FAQ.
