Keep The Company Lean And Mean
Before the dot-com burst, many companies were still on a hiring spree. As a result, many companies (big and small) have to go through the agony of laying off employees after the dot-com burst. Today, we have heard a lot of stories on high tech companies paying an enormous amount of money just to hire the rock stars. And many companies don’t even know what to do with the people they just hired.
Assuming a company has a sound business model, it should focus its resource to grow and strengthen the market segments that it is focusing on. And the same should go for head count. That means new hiring is only for areas of focus. On the other hand, if a company does not know what to do with the new hires or many of the employees don’t have enough work to do, it is a signal that it is time to re-balance the workforce.
