Infrastructure First

Before more 5G applications can be developed, full-scale deployment of 5G infrastructure has to be there. For example, autonomous driving relying on 5G might not work in rural areas if the infrastructure is not there. So how can the carriers reduce the cost to build out the 5G infrastructure?

Seeing the success of the large cloud service providers in adopting the open standard to lower their cost of operation, many carriers are increasingly looking to open technology to build out the infrastructure for 5G. For example, Vodafone has recently announced it’s started OpenRAN trials in the U.K. The OpenRAN (Open Radio Access Network) is an open standard to build radio access solutions with open source software running on general-purpose hardware from vendors such as Dell, HPE and Supermicro. By using standardized and lower cost network equipment for the different parts of the radio access network, carriers can reduce their costs of providing service and have more vendor flexibility. Read More...
