It is probably the right thing to do to scale back on things like advertising, marketing, and operations etc. But not with research and development. A lot of companies came out much stronger after the downturn are companies that continue to invest in R&D. During the downturn, you can bet that competition will become ever more fierce. Unless you have a better product, you are going to lose business. The last thing you want to do is to cut the R&D budget. Source: Strategyzer Not too long ago, a high tech company was about to hire a senior person from a Fortune 500 company. All went well except for one thing. And it was not about money. The candidate wants the CTO title but it was taken already. They can’t take away the CTO title from the other person so they offered the candidate a different title — Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) to close the deal! Sounds familiar? Even big companies have to mobilize their celebrity CEOs to hire top talent. For example, JP Morgan Chase’s Jamie Dimon just poached Professor Manuela Veloso from Carnegie Mellon University to be their Head of Artificial Intelligence Research.
